Mela begins with fervour in Mahoba

Mahoba, Nov 11 (UNI) The historic month-long 'Govardhan Mela' has commenced with traditional puja in Charkhari area of this district.

Devotees in a large number thronged the place to participate in a grand procession, which was taken out on the first day of the fair yesterday.

The inauguration of the fair was done by district magistrate Jai Prakash Mishra.

Besides, the idol of Lord Govardhan Nath was installed.

Govardhan Mela was started in 1883 by the then ruler in Charkhari, Maharaj Malkhan Singh Ju Dev. The ruler, who was a big devotee of God Krishna, set up nearby 800 temples on his name here. It is since then the place is also known as 'Mini Vrindavan.' Govardhan Mela Organiser, also president of Nagar Palika Parishad, Arvind Singh Chauhan said, ''various religious and cultural programmes are being held on the 126th occasion of the fair this year.'' People in lakhs are expected to come in the Mela, he added.
